The Orchards

Award-winning Development

ERMC were appointed by Guildford Borough Council to develop a residential design solution for a brownfield site, a former public house called ‘The Apple Tree’, taking into consideration the Planners’ requirement for density, the surrounding context and massing. Elected members were keen to use this project to show that apartment living can be both sustainable, long term and can create opportunity within the Borough.

A development of 18 affordable living units were designed to introduce some contemporary architecture to the area. ERMC were successful in gaining planning approval for the development and then being novated to the Design and Build contractor through the technical delivery. The technical detailing of the three-storey block of flats was particularly challenging with various junctions in the design but needed to ensure the architecture was interesting. The final outcome for the Borough is an award-winning development of new affordable homes.

Considered design

We took a considered design approach, reflecting the specific site constraints and needs of the local area. Care was taken to ensure a harmonious addition to the local vernacular, with property types and styles to complement the surrounding environment.

Functionality and ease of operation of building services by users was a priority as well as the design of the homes which should be visually appealing and enhance, yet be sympathetic to, the local environment.

The properties have been arranged to allow for both a
generous frontage within the site as well as providing
spacious garden/outdoor amenity.

Landscaping

Existing established trees were retained where possible in order to maintain both site amenity value and suitable
visual screening.

Additional planting in and around the newly created paved areas provided a visual break and a softer aspect to the development. Such areas are also believed to aid residents in maintaining harmony and pride in their surroundings. It is also thought this may reduce crime and can promote a feeling of well-being amongst owners.

A central walkway with timber pergolas with vined planting
over has been designed into the scheme to add an
ambient and pleasant link to the rear of the site.
